She is inside what is known as the Authors’ Yurt at the 2017 Edinburgh International Book Festival, the year her memoir was published. A yurt is a circular tent of fabric or skins on a collapsible framework, traditionally used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia and Turkey. Here, it is a multi-room structure with beautiful multicoloured rugs and a warm atmosphere. Penny, who has red hair and wears a sleeveless cotton dress in blue and yellow, is smiling.
