Penny sits in her wheelchair holding a copy of her memoir, First in the World Somewhere. She is inside what is known as the Authors’ Yurt at the 2017 Edinburgh International Book Festival, the year her memoir was published. A yurt is a circular tent of fabric or skins on a collapsible framework, traditionally used by nomads in Mongolia, Siberia and Turkey. Here, it is a multi-room structure with beautiful multicoloured rugs and a warm atmosphere. Penny, who has red hair and wears a sleeveless cotton dress in blue and yellow, is smiling.
